Government to protect Common Law rights for workers

WorkCover Queensland had recently contemplated changes to the system by introducing thresholds for common law claims.  Numerous submissions had been made which opposed the proposed changes and identified new opportunities that could improve the viability of the scheme.

Workers’ Rights Coalition meeting – East Brisbane

Workers' Rights CoalitionThe Queensland Government has proposed changes to the law relating to injured workers. These proposed changes have not been favourably received by many institutions that uphold workers’ rights.

The Workers’ Rights Coalition is one such group and they are organising a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday 14 April 2010) at East Brisbane and we will show our support by attending.

Qld WorkCover changes – how they affect your rights

Queensland WorkCover has recently proposed policy changes that will affect many people who are injured at work. The current scheme allows injured workers to pursue a common law claim for an impairment threshold of 0%. The proposed changes could lift that threshold to 15% meaning injuries will have to be much greater in order for a common law claim to be pursued.

Attorney-General defends no-win no-fee

Queensland’s first law officer has defended so-called ambulance-chasing lawyers, saying they give average people access to justice.

Attorney-General Kerry Shine, who founded the prominent firm now known as Shine Lawyers, said the no-win, no-fee firms took on enormous risk in litigation and were often left with massive bills if cases were dismissed.

Renewed call for compensation review

The public should be worried about the ominous silence surrounding moves to reform Queensland’s restrictive injury compensation laws, says Brisbane injury compensation lawyer Mark O’Connor.

Attorney General Kerry Shine recently said personal injury laws needed reviewing as they prevent injured people from receiving justice while insurance companies profit. However, Mr O’Connor fears the issue is being swept under the carpet as nothing has been said or done since.
